Profile

Dan's exhilarating pastoral compositions are inspired by people and places, the changing seasons, light and space, and as the artist himself puts it, "by the ordinary, not the extraordinary. The things around me in my everyday life are what lead me into my paintings, not the exotic or unfamiliar. If the light is good on a particular day and the clouds fall into a certain formation I am soon reaching for my sketchbook."

Influenced by the expressionistic curves of Van Gogh and Lucian Freud, Dan has also been challenged by his two young sons' view of the world. "I love the way my children see the world around them; everything is bold, bright and uncomplicated. When I paint I try to reflect how the scene makes me feel using uninhibited, instinctive brush marks and bold colour." Dan paints with acrylics on canvas as he finds this medium allows him the freedom to be spontaneous as well as to create vibrant and immediate shades.

Born in Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, Dan now lives and works in Berkshire, where his studio is located in the grounds of a local country house with stunning views across landscaped gardens. Although he only started to exhibit his work in 2008, he has rapidly made an impression and has received several commissions from private collectors.

"With my raw and instinctive approach to painting I aim to capture the essence and natural beauty of a subject."
