Kruger National Park is one of Africa’s largest and most spectacular game reserves. To many of us, Kruger sounds like the dream destination for the holiday of a lifetime, but for artist Darryn Eggleton, it was his childhood home. He grew up within the borders of the National Park and this extraordinary beginning provided him with an amazing foundation for his future. One of his most recent paintings grew out of a very special experience. “Gladiator is based on photographs I took on an early morning game drive along the Sabie River in Kruger National Park. We were watching a herd of elephants which were acting a bit stressed, as if something else was around, but we couldn’t see anything at all. Then a sound made me look to my left and a huge male lion was walking out of the cover of the Bush, straight towards me! He came within a couple of feet and then all of a sudden two more male lions appeared. They were all quite restless and looked as if they were smelling the air to find the lionesses. We stayed with them for a while but eventually they disappeared back into the Bush. With the herd of elephants and a small herd of buffalo close by, it was like being surrounded by the giants of the African Bush. It was a truly awesome sighting made even more magical by the morning light and how close they were to me. I could have reached out and touched them.” DARRYN EGGLETON: UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL Contact the gallery to enquire about Darryn’s latest collection GLADIATOR Original on Canvas 47 x 36” 47 IN THE PICTURE GALLERY NEWS
