This collection, consisting of both watercolour and charcoal pieces, has been over a year in the planning and making and has bought me into contact with those on the front line of conservation - sanctuary owners, ground workers and photographers. I wanted to do justice to the wildlife featured in it; my aim has been to create a series of portraits that evoke an emotional response from the viewer, without humanising the subject, and to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, through a mixture of both representational and abstract mark making. Sarah Stokes is moved to paint by nature, particularly the animal kingdom, and her images of wildlife, livestock and birds of prey have built her an enviable reputation in the UK and beyond. Over the last year however, she has moved into the dramatic world of big cats and created a breath-taking new collection of substantial and compelling wildlife images which contrast with, and complement, her more delicate portrayals of domestic wildlife. Sarah says: “Like many of us, I am humbled by the sheer majesty and beauty of this earth’s Double Trouble, Original Painting on Mounted Paper, 30” x 22” 28 SARAH STOKES ARTIST FEATURE
