Pezhman

BIOGRAPHY

As a mixed media artist, Pezhman explores the surfaces of his works, developing textures and colours to convey vivid sensations of actual experiences. His beautifully crafted original artworks fuse elements of photography, oil, acrylic, textiles, resin, encaustic, silver leaf and more, to create a dynamic, almost living texture with a pearlised finish. Inspired by a wide range of sources, his method is born from a spirit of exploration which perhaps originates in his early life experiences, and his work represents a personal attempt to preserve those moments he believes deserve to be timeless.

Pezhman was born in 1976 in Shiraz – the centre of Iran’s cultural civilization. Emigrating three years later as the result of the revolution, Pezhman grew up in the United States. As a child he was an avid explorer and this adventurous streak has stayed with him; as an adult he still thrives out in the open, trekking, kayaking, mountain climbing, and fishing. When he began his career in photography, he was inspired by the contrast between natural and urban environments and his work captured destination landscapes on film.

Pezhman cites his own drive for exploration and his first photography road trip at 17 as the primary influences for picking up a camera in the first place. Passion set in as he immersed himself in the world of photography converting his bathroom to a dark room and enrolling in various photography programs. He studied art and film at Atlanta College of Art and continued his education at the New York School of Photography before landing an assistantship with a prominent studio.

As his career progressed so did the world of technology. Digital photography emerged and quickly moved in on traditional techniques. Craving the involvement he once had developing his imagery, Pezhman pushed forward into mixed media; slowly at first, with only oil paints, but adding more diverse media as his creative passion was ignited once again.

The Boudoir collection was inspired by some photographs he came across depicting a voyage made by his family to Manhattan in the early 1900s.  The story the photographs told was one of that elegance and glamour which was peculiar to the pre-war era, and they sparked a desire to create a series of images reflecting on the ageless narrative of beauty and femininity.  Pezhman continues his explorations of mixed media in Atlanta, Georgia. His work is collected and displayed mainly across the United States.

“I believe there is a touch of magic in the medium of photography that is made up of light, chemistry, natural beauty and the ability to capture a perfect moment on film.”
